El problema en sí radica en el kernel de las versiones 6.06, 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 y 9.10. Las versiones 7.xx no están afectadas. Se trata de un problema grave ya que podría permitir el acceso completo al sistema entre otros. Impresionante lo que se puede llegar a hacer con HTML5. Diría que es mejor que Paint xD

La aplicación online Sketchpad es similar a otras aplicaciones de dibujo existentes que funcionan directamente en el navegador web. La diferencia de Sketchpad es que está completamente desarrollada en el lenguaje HTML5 y no recurre a tecnologías como Flash, que requieren la instalación de componentes adicionales en el ordenador.

Es como la versión HTML5 de YouTube (o la versión Feather), que funciona en navegadores compatibles con HTML5 y sin necesidad de tener instalado Flash.

De momento es pronto para anticipar la muerte de Flash, pero es evidente que la evolución del lenguaje HTML nativo para la web, primero con Ajax (combinando HTML y JavaScript) y ahora con HTML5 aumenta cada vez más las posibilidades de desarrollo para la web de forma autónoma (incluso neutra) respecto a dependencias de terceras partes.

Hoy aplicaciones como Sketchpad son sólo un anticipo de lo que se podrá hacer en el navegador en el futuro, pero de momento no puede competir con la omnidependencia de Flash para desarrollos online que ofrezcan vídeo, juegos, e incluso publicidad interactiva.

Precisamente éste debate (Flash vs. HTML5) es uno de los más encendidos desde que la presentación del Apple iPad revelase que por ahora el iPhone OS (el sistema operativo del iPad / iPhone / iPod touch) seguirá sin incluir Flash – y parece que nunca la hará a juzgar por las recientes declaraciones de Steve Jobs.

He generally hates phones, but he just blogged that he purchased a Nexus One and is a happy camper so far. He loves the concept of having a phone that runs Linux and thinks the N1 is a winner. Linus admits he was hesitant about purchasing the phone online, but made the jump after reading about the recent pinch-zoom upgrade. The chief architect of the Linux kernel also addressed the recent removal of Android from the Linux tree as of the 2.6.33 kernel release. I don’t worry about out-of-tree development for odd devices too much. I wish we could merge Android, but I also accept it likely being a few years away. Mediante el blog oficial de complementos para Firefox, el equipo de Mozilla ha informado a todos los usuarios del navegador que se han localizado dos extensiones que al instalarse ejecutan código malicioso en nuestros sistemas. Al parecer, los sistemas de detección de malware que tienen en los laboratorios de Firefox no han sido capaces de detectar los agujeros de seguridad.

Dichas extensiones son Sothink Web Video Downloader 4.0 y Master Filer, que contienen los archivos Win32.LdPinch.gen y Win32.Bifrose.32.Bifrose respectivamente. Si algún usuario ha instalado estas aplicaciones tiene un troyano instalado en sus sistemas, que no se elimina al borrar los complementos del navegador. De momento el problema sólo parece afectar a los sistemas Windows.

Las dos extensiones con este código ya han sido retiradas de la web de complementos de Firefox, pero se han descargado más de 4500 copias de las susodichas. Si habéis llegado a probarlas en vuestro navegador, recomendamos que hagáis un análisis completo usando vuestro antivirus lo antes posible.

Insisto en lo que ya he dicho varias veces: Apple está perdiendo el norte...¿tanto miedo le tienen? La palabra Android no interesa a Apple: parece que no ha sido del agrado de la compañía de la manzana que los desarrolladores de Flash of Genius, ganador del Android Developer Challenge, lo comentaran en la página de la aplicación para iPhone y les han mandado un correo electrónico pidiéndoles que eliminen la mención a Android en la descripción y que, si no lo hacen, la disponibilidad de su aplicación en la App Store se verá interrumpida.

Hace aproximadamente unos 15 días les comentaba que YouTube había agregado no sólo el soporte para HTML5 sino además también contenidos de pago que permitiría, solamente en Estados Unidos, alquilar películas independientes del festival Sundance. Esto fue solamente un experimento y la empresa quería ver cuál era la reacción de los usuarios de la red social.

El experimento duró 10 días y a lo largo de este período, donde se alquilaban las películas a US$3.99, YouTube recaudó US$10.709. Esta suma para una empresa como Google no hace en absoluto la diferencia, pero hay que tener algunas cuestiones antes de opinar.

Antes que nada, esto duró solamente 10 días y la opción de cartelera eran sólo 5 películas independientes que si bien podían llamar la atención por estar en el festival Sundance, no le importa a la mayoría de las personas que quieren mirar un film. Finalmente y en mi opinión lo más importante de todo, hay que considerar que el experimento fue para usuarios de Estados Unidos. ¿Imaginan lo que hubiera sido si hubiese funcionado en todo el mundo? Esa cifra se hubiera multiplicado por mucho.

Chris Dale, un vocero de YouTube, explicó que los resultados de esta prueba piloto en la empresa fueron muy bienvenidos y que excedieron sus expectativas.

Lo más seguro es que este no sea el final de estas pruebas y Google, antes de decidir si dar la opción de elegir películas para alquilar o no en el sitio como un servicio estable hará mucho más que evaluarlo durante 10 días.

Tal y como indican en H-Online, el pasado viernes se produjo una decisión importante para el impulso de la filosofía Open Source en Dinamarca. Representantes de los distintos partidos del gobierno en el Parlamento Danés alcanzaron un acuerdo para adoptar el formato ODF como el oficial para salvaguardar documentos a partir de abril de 2011.

Los tribunales nacionales todavía aceptan, en muchos casos, la validez de las patentes de software concedidas por las oficinas nacionales de patentes y la Oficina Europea de Patentes (OEP) que está fuera del control democrático. Ésta no sólo continua concediendo patentes de software, sino también ejerciendo presión política en favor de ellas. A pesar de la profunda crisis actual del sistema de patentes, las oficinas de patentes no son capaces de reformarse y ponen en peligro a demasiadas empresas europeas con su política de concesión.

En 2005, la Comisión pareció ser más favorable a los intereses de los grandes conglomerados internacionales que a los de las pequeñas y medianas empresas de Europa - que son una importante fuerza impulsora de la innovación europea. El Parlamento Europeo rechazó al final la directiva de patentes de software, pero no tiene derechos para iniciativas legislativas.

One thing that got lost in the commotion of the extensions launch is a feature that is near and dear to my heart: Google Chrome 4 now natively supports Greasemonkey user scripts. Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension I wrote in 2004 that allows developers to customize web pages using simple JavaScript and it was the inspiration for some important parts of our extension system. Ever since the beginning of the Chromium project, friends and coworkers have been asking me to add support for user scripts in Google Chrome. I'm happy to report that as of the last Google Chrome release, you can install any user script with a single click. So, now you can use emoticons on blogger. Or, you can browse Google Image Search with a fancy lightbox. In fact, there's over 40,000 scripts on userscripts.org alone.Installation is quick and easy, just like installing an extension. That's because under the covers, the user script is actually converted into an extension. This means that management tasks like disabling and uninstalling work just like they do with extensions.Note that user scripts are powerful software and have full access to your private data on any web site. So, for example, they could read all your web mail or access your online bank. Be sure to read the comments on any user scripts in order to decide whether you trust the author with this power.Also keep in mind that some user scripts won't work in Google Chrome yet, because of differences between it and Firefox. Based on some analysis that the current maintainers of Greasemonkey did, I expect between 15%-25% of scripts to not work in Google Chrome. If you find such a script, you should consider letting the author know. There may be something he or she can do to easily fix the problem. In the meantime, we'll keep working on bugs on our side to bring our implementation closer to Greasemonkey.Have fun trying out the thousands of available scripts. This is the first step toward the next openSUSE release. The most important goal of this first milestone is to test the build interactions between newly added features in openSUSE Factory, also known as “get the snapshot to build”. It is in no way feature complete or ready for daily usage. There is no code freeze for any component yet, so many major changes are still to come. This 11.3 Milestone build will give you a first glimpse of the direction we are pushing the distribution. Read more to learn about the major changes that happened since the release of openSUSE 11.2.

Desktops GNOME is at the development version 2.29.5. It is the first GNOME release for year 2010 and fifth development release towards 2.30. A lot of things happened. The webcam booth application cheese completely dropped its HAL dependency. The accounts dialog of the instant messenger Empathy has been reworked to reduce the number of steps to add a new account and Epiphany, the web browser, now stores all form authentication data in the GNOME Keyring. The Nepomuk Semantic Search framework has made leaps forward. A new storage backend makes it a lot faster and a timeline view of your files makes finding files used in the past easier. The Plasma Desktop has been further polished. The new widget explorer provides a richer experience for managing desktop widgets. Plasma widgets can now be shared with other users over the network and the handling of storage devices in the desktop shell has been streamlined. Also, in 4.4 Plasma’s little sibling, the Netbook shell debuts as a technology preview. The KDE Development Platform adds the new KAuth authorization framework for easy and secure privilege escalation. The KDE project has a detailed release announcement! LXDE – the “Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment” is a new player in the openSUSE desktop selection. It is an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment. It comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing. LXDE uses less CPU and less RAM than other environments. It is especially designed for computers with low hardware specifications.

Desktop Apps The world’s best browser Firefox got updated to the latest version 3.6.0. It supports a new type of theme called Personas, which allow users to change Firefox’s appearance with a single click. The protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse got improved and the mozilla developers brought JavaScript performance, the overall browser responsiveness, and startup time up to speed. Thunderbird the award-winning email application from Mozilla was updated to version 3.0.1 which includes a lot of stability and security fixes. OpenOffice, the free and open productivity suite, in the version 3.2-beta4 (3.1.99.4) is included. OpenOffice 3.2 will bring faster start up times, make further strides in compliance with ODF 1.2 and improve support for other common office document types.

VirtualBox Open Source Edition ships version 3.1.0 Beta1 (3.0.90). It brings quite a lot of new and long awaited features. For instance live migration, moving virtual machines across hardware machines, 2D video acceleration for win hosts and performance improvements for AMD64 guests. Other updated Desktop Apps include abiword the multiplatform word processor (2.8.1), amarok KDEs media player (2.2.2), the KDE Photo Manager digikam (1.0.0), and the BitTorrent clients ktorrent (3.3.2) and transmission (1.82). Base System This milestone is based on the kernel 2.6.32. The GNU C Library, version 2.11 brings many new interfaces and optimized string functions for different platforms. Also in this milestone is Udev version 150 which includes many bugfixes, removed support for the deprecated non-libata IDE devices and introduced a new “input_id” prober for input devices such as keyboard/mice, touchpads or tablets.

Our command line package manager zypper bumped its version to 1.2.15. This includes better error handling for media exceptions, for instance the possibility to eject a non-accessible drive or turn of an SSL CA check. A download option was added to in, up, dup, ve, and patch commands to set the package download mode to ad-hoc. Available download modes: only, in-advance, in-heaps, as-needed. And finally weakly required packages (recommended/suggested) are now shown in the summary. The tool that is handling all your package downloads in the background, aria2 was updated to the version 1.8.0 with a lot of new XML-RPC methods and support to save metadata as torrent files. Libraries The amazing clutter library that is used for visually rich and animated graphical user interfaces like the Moblin UI moved to the latest development snapshot 1.1.4. QT, version 4.6.0, introduces an animation framework that helps to build animated high performance interfaces. Also multitouch and gesture recognition are now possible. Network/Security The courier IMAP server stack received several updates including improvements for support of Mozilla Thunderbird clients. Nagios 3.2.0 includes several bug fixes, including fixes for service and host check scheduling and availability reporting. The network management protocol daemon, net-snmp (5.5) includes various new IPv6 features and the ability to “alias” transports to a more simple name. Samba 3.4.5, the latest stable release of Samba 3.4, which is a bugfix release is also included. Development Tools For the Hackers we include several updates too. The GNU Debugger (7.0) now has python scripting support. Handles reverse debugging, process record and replay and multi-architecture debugging. CMake version 2.8.0, the cross-platform open-source build system, is included with the new QT gui, support for Visual Studio 2010 and significant improvements for the Eclipse project generator. The openSuSE KIWI image system was updated to 3.95 with countless bugfixes, some new features around LVM and other storage topics. Testing! Testing! Testing!
